Job Summary

The Payroll Manager plans, organizes, executes, and audits all aspects of the payroll function for Cox Media Group (“CMG”).  This is a hands-on role responsible for managing our outsourced payroll processing vendor with direct responsibility for all payroll activities, systems, processes, optimization, taxes, and auditing.

The ideal candidate is empathetic to employees, passionate about payroll integrity and compliance and known as a highly responsive team player with strong problem solving and communication skills.  This leader must be energized by and capable of working in a fast-paced environment managing multiple priorities and projects successfully.                                     

Job Responsibilities:

  • Manages bi-weekly payroll for approximately 3,500 U.S. employees.
  • Manages the payroll team in a partially outsourced payroll model through ADP while constantly evaluating the payroll process to find optimization and efficiencies.
  • Acts as escalation point for employee questions and takes into account each employee’s unique situation to resolve the issue.
  • Maintains compliance by working closely with ADP and Cox Media Group’s Legal team to ensure all relevant procedural and legislative requirements are fulfilled while delivering a quality service to customers.
  • Partners with ADP to ensure the Payroll process remains compliant as state and Federal laws change.
  • Works in conjunction with internal teams such as HR operations, technology, talent, benefits, HR business partners, and compensation to identify opportunities to enhance processes and improve the employee experience.
  • Ensures the unemployment process is running smoothly and state timelines are met.
  • Partners with ADP and Finance to ensure timeliness in payroll tax administration, including state and local tax registrations. Interacts with Federal and state agencies as needed.
  • Provides support for tax audits and answers inquiries from tax jurisdictions.
  • Establishes and maintains internal controls for payroll processing. Ensures process documentation is maintained, updated, and reviewed.
  • Provides proactive on-going training and support to CMG time and attendance users and other payroll submitters and approvers to ensure timely and accurate processing.
  • Identifies, recommends, and drives process improvement initiatives that contribute to long-term operational excellence.
  • Manages internal team and external vendor KPI’s, maintains proper root cause analyses and ensure prompt identification, accountability, and resolution of issues.
  • Performs Monthly/Quarterly and Year End payroll close activities.
  • Reviews and verifies payroll processed by ADP and makes necessary adjustments and corrections.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

 

What we look for

Basic Qualifications:

  • At least 5+ years leading Payroll function and team for a mid-sized company (+1,000 employees) in a multi-state environment to include payroll tax filing
  • At least 8+ years in Payroll
  • Proven ability to build productive work relationships and operate in a customer-centric manner
  • Advanced knowledge in payroll tax, FLSA and compliance
  • Advance Excel skills
  • Highly organized, solid multi-tasking skills, and the ability to operate effectively in ambiguous situations
  • Motivated self-starter, proactive and action-oriented, requiring limited supervision
