Cox Media Group in Orlando, FL is seeking a creative, team-oriented journalist to lead the powerhouse WFTV/WRDQ team as a News Director.

This is more than just a leadership role – it’s the opportunity to grow this legacy brand on multiple platforms.  This individual will be responsible for leading an experienced team to new audience heights.

Reporting to the VP/General Manager, the ideal candidate must have a proven track record with breaking news, severe weather, investigative and enterprise reporting and the successful delivery of digital content through a wide variety of products.  With Orlando being a top growing Hispanic market, this person must be passionate about diversity and ensure our workforce mirrors the communities it serves.  This person must also have excellent leadership and solid interpersonal, people skills. Must be well-versed in recruiting, developing and retaining top talent, managing resources, creating and executing research-based strategic plans and growing new opportunities in a multi-media environment. Must be able to work well with all station personnel, at all levels.

Essential Duties Include:

  • Provide strategic and tactical direction for day to day news coverage, breaking news, special projects, investigative reporting, special event coverage for all distribution channels, including creating content for OTT channels.
  • Supervise Executive Producers, Producers, and Managing Editor in carrying out the organization's policies and goals.
  • Work collaboratively to strategically distribute content on all platforms.
  • Grow and develop a diverse staff, to include identifying, recruiting and retaining top talent from a wide variety of sources.
  • Interview, hire, coach and develop employees; plan, assign, and direct work, appraise performance, reward, and discipline as needed. Address complaints and resolve problems promptly.
  • Interpret and execute research from multiple research sources to provide the best news product for the Orlando market.
  • Prepare and execute department operating and personnel budgets.
  • Collaborate with consultants and internal resources to operationalize research.
  • Review previous news programs for the critique of production, news content and personnel performance. 
  • Lead, mentor, coach individual team members, and their leaders to regularly evaluate and improve performance and professionalism.
  • As an active, engaged member of the community, seek out individuals and groups to determine their news needs and interests.
  • Plan, assign, and direct work in an effective and efficient manner.
  • Appraise performance; rewarding and disciplining employees timely and action to resolve issues promptly.
  • Actively promote cultural change and support new ways of working and continuous improvement to provide a high quality, professional, consistent, and cohesive newsroom. This includes: working collaboratively and communicating proactively; understanding the needs of and soliciting/monitoring feedback from managers/employees.



Job Requirements


  • Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university is preferred.
  • A minimum of 5 years of television newsroom leadership experience in a top 20 market is required.
  • Must have a strong background in news research and proven experience in growing a digital newsroom.
  • Demonstrated successful ability to develop employees through regular feedback and performance management.
  • Previous experience working with programming news on a growing duopoly station. 
  • Ability to effectively communicate the vision, mission, and strategic direction and to designate key roles/champions in the newsroom.
  • Excellent comprehension around breaking news, major news, investigative and enterprise journalism.
  • Experience with and solid ability to develop and manage the newsroom budget.
  • Ability to identify and match talents to tasks.
  • Solid contract and negotiating skills.
  • Ability to resolve equipment and staff assignment problems.
  • Experience working directly with News Associations in providing regional, national and international network material.
  • Ability and successful track record with identifying and recruiting top performers from a wide variety of sources.
  • Experience and successful achievement with interviewing, hiring, and training employees for both in front of and behind the camera.

Language Skills:

Ability to analyze, and interpret general business trade materials and professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from individuals and groups such as employees, managers, clients, customers, and the general public, including viewers and our audience.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to assess and solve practical problems, deal effectively with a variety of ambiguous or concrete variables in situations.  Have the ability to interpret a variety of research from different sources, use good judgment and provide instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule format.
