Job Summary

Cox Media Group is looking for a Managing Editor to join the WHIO team! This critical member is the second in command of the newsroom leading the day-to-day production of editorial content.

Reporting to the Director of News, the Managing Editor will oversee the daily news operation. This position will help make sure the best stories of the day are covered and presented in the most engaging ways possible on each platform. This position works with reporters every day, overseeing their news gathering efforts and being a final set of eyes on their copy. The Managing Editor works with all other positions in the newsroom to ensure our coverage is accurate and competitive while also meeting our research–based goals on all platforms. The ideal candidate will have a strong record of supporting and growing talent, while also overseeing long-term station projects.

WHAT YOU WILL DO: 

  • You must be a risk taker and someone ready to adapt, change and think out-of-the-box.
  • You set an urgent tone in the newsroom and are aggressive on winning the day while pushing for strong accountability journalism and being an empathetic leader
  • Through careful training and coaching this role elevates reporters and MSJs daily - working on storytelling, story crafting, active live shots and overall presentation and look on air. This is not a position that just rubber stamps daily stories.
  • Oversees the daily editorial process and on-air execution of newscasts and holds direct reports accountable for meeting daily established goals for digital and on-air
  • Wins weather and pushes weather coverage on all platforms and helps establish a stronger push for UGC on air and on digital
  • Actively discusses with the news team ways to “own” the big stories of the day and WIN the day, discusses breakouts in the daily editorial meetings as well as pushing EPs to think early on bold ways to showcase the tops of all newscasts
  • Establishes a strong bridge between all dayparts
  • Sources and recruits journalists to join the Newscenter 7 team
  • Maintains schedules for on-air talent
  • Works with Content Center, Digital Director and News Director to meet all digital goals (which on-air talent need improvement?)
  • Oversee Meteorological Team to reach established goals

 

 

What we look for

WHAT YOU WILL BRING:

•    Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university in Journalism or Communications preferred
•    A minimum of 10 years professional experience in local TV news is preferred for this job as well as at least 3 years of news management experience
•    Line Producing experience is a plus
•    Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
•    Must be thoroughly professional in all aspects of journalism
•    Must be well-read on current affairs and have a wide range working knowledge and understanding of general interest subjects
•    Excellent news judgment
•    Ability to successfully work in a fast-paced, growing and changing work environment
•    Must have strong communication and interpersonal skills
•    Must possess a positive attitude
